Mike Barfield

Mike Barfield is a multiple-award-winning author, cartoonist, poet and performer. His Apparently cartoon strip has featured in the pages of Private Eye for over two decades. He has a first-class science degree, and writes award-winning funny non-fiction books for children, often in a comic-strip format.

 

His books are published in over 30 languages worldwide, including in China and Korea. A Day in the Life of a Poo, Gnu and You, illustrated by Jess Bradley, won the Blue Peter Book Award in 2021, while The Element in the Room, illustrated by Lauren Humphrey, was shortlisted for both the Blue Peter Award and the Royal Society Children's Book Prize. Other titles have been shortlisted for the Lollies Laugh-Out-Loud book award, and his 2024 book The World's First Rollercoaster and Other Amazing Inventions, illustrated by Franzi Hollbacher, is shortlisted for the Spark Book Awards and longlisted for the Children's Literature Festivals Book Award.

 

New and forthcoming titles include The World's First Human Cannonball and Other Incredible Jobs (Templar), A Day in the Life of Fossils, Fire and Other Fantastic Finds (Buster) and Mike's first picture book, Keith's Big Leap (Andersen), illustrated by Momoko Abe.

Mike is married with two grown-up children and lives in North Yorkshire.
